Privacy policy

In short

Bopomo is made by Hulusi Tunç. It keeps as little as it can: your progress is backed up so it survives a new phone, and nothing about you is sold. The app has no ads and doesn't track you. This website can tell TikTok and Meta that one of their ads brought you here, as set out under Ad pixels.

This website

If you join the waitlist, we keep your email, the date, your browser's language and how you found us: the site you came from, the tags on the ad link you arrived on (utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign and utm_content, which name the platform, the campaign and the video), and the share code of the friend whose link you used, if you used one. We use your email to send you a welcome with your place and your share link, an invite to try Bopomo early before launch, and the App Store link when it's out, and, at launch, to give you the founding price if you were one of the first 500 to join and any free months your friends earned you. Resend, an email service, sends these emails for us; it gets your email and the email's contents, and nothing else. Every email has a link to stop them. We don't sell your email or give it to advertisers.

Your share link. When you join you get a six-letter code. If a friend joins with your link, we note that they came through your code, and each one earns you a free month of Plus at launch, up to 3. Neither of you sees the other's email. Anyone who types your email into the form sees your place and your link, so keep that in mind if you'd rather it stayed private.

If you write to us on the support page, we keep your email and message to answer you. To protect the forms from abuse, we keep a scrambled (hashed) form of your IP address for an hour. Bopomo's own pages set no cookies. They count visits with Vercel Web Analytics and measure how fast pages load with Vercel Speed Insights: both are cookieless, keep no IP address or anything else that identifies you, and only see which page you opened, the link and site you came from, and your kind of device and country. The share code in a friend's link is removed before anything is counted. Your browser keeps the ad link you arrived on for that tab, and your answer about ad pixels on your device.

To be taken off the waitlist, write to us on the support page and we'll delete your email and your code.

Ad pixels

We advertise Bopomo on TikTok and Instagram. To learn which ads bring people who join, the site can load TikTok's pixel and Meta's pixel. They tell TikTok and Meta that you came from one of their ads, looked at the page and joined the waitlist. To do that they set their own cookies, and TikTok and Meta may link the visit to your account with them under their own privacy policies. We never give them your email.

We may also use Google Analytics to see how people use the site. It sets cookies like the pixels do, so it follows the same rules, with Google's ad features switched off.

In the UK, the EEA, Switzerland and Canada they load only after you say yes. Elsewhere they load unless you turn them off here, or your browser sends Global Privacy Control. The site works the same without them.

Ad pixels on this device: checking…

What stays on your iPhone

Your voice. When you speak in a lesson, your iPhone turns the sound into text to check it. On iPhones that support it this happens on the device; on others Apple's speech recognition processes it under Apple's privacy policy. Bopomo never receives or keeps your audio.

Your photos. Snap and the lens read photos with your iPhone's own vision, and the stickers you keep stay on your iPhone.

Reminders are scheduled on your iPhone. A short log of speaking tries (the word, the try, whether it was understood; never audio or what you said) stays on your iPhone, and the same facts go to usage data below.

What we keep on our server

Our server runs on Supabase, in Sydney, Australia. It holds:

What we send to Anthropic

Some features use Claude, an AI made by Anthropic. Only if you agree during setup, your first name is sent so Lin can suggest a Taiwanese name. If you use the AI camera, the photo is sent so Claude can say what's in it. When you say a line out loud in a lesson, your iPhone turns your speech into text; that text, the line you were practising and the lesson step are sent so Lin can answer you. Your voice itself is never sent, and we don't store what you said: only how many replies your account asked for that day. Anthropic uses all of this to answer and does not train its models on it. Pronunciations always come from Bopomo's own dictionary, not from the AI.

Usage data

To see which parts of Bopomo work, the app sends what happens in it to PostHog, an analytics service: steps of setup, lessons started and finished, whether a spoken word was understood (the word and the try, never your voice), reviews, rewards opened, the paywall and plan events, and sign-in method. Each phone gets a random id that isn't linked to your account, your name or your email.

Never sent: audio, anything you type, photos, contacts or location. There are no ads and no tracking across apps.

Turn it off in the app: Me → Privacy policy → Share usage data. What's waiting on your iPhone is deleted.

Purchases

Bopomo Plus is bought through Apple. We never see your payment details; Apple tells the app whether you have Plus.

Deleting your data

In the app, Me → Account → Delete account deletes your account and everything on our server straight away. Reset progress clears your progress on your iPhone and in the backup. Deleting the app removes what's on your iPhone.

Children

Bopomo is not made for children under 13 and doesn't knowingly collect their data.

Changes and questions

If this changes, this page and its date change with it. Questions about your data go to the support page.
